Hired! From Army Reservist to Veterans HR
Hired From Army Reservist to Veterans HRHired From Army Reservist to Veterans HRBanker turned Army officer lands job in Department of Veterans Affairs.Jim Deimer faced a real challenge at the end of his active duty. A former human-resources professional in the financial sector, the Army reservist welches coming up on the end of a long activation in support of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan as a personnel officer. For my occupational specialty, it meant sitting in a concrete bunker, he said. I welches an infantry officer, but I was in charge of personnel detachments that processed soldiers in theater. If you went into Afghanistan, you would pass through my unit.I was in banking for the past eight years, and you know, that mobilization and being away from my industry group didnt cripple me, Deimer said. But it put me at a disadvantage, because employers were looking at my active service and saying, Wow, so every five years youre going to be called up and asked to serve 18 months on active duty? So, as he prepared to come off active duty, Deimer turned to Ladders to help him network. I think I was doing everything I was supposed to be doing, he said.I found The Ladders to be a good resource not just for the $100K jobs. It gets your name in front of people.Deimer also turned to his military network and looked up an old colleague from the reserves. This individual, the belastung time I had made contact with him it was well over 10 years ago, Deimer says. We served together in a National Guard unit. He was in human resources like myself, and we had shared resumes and just stayed in contact over the years.Deimers contact worked as the chief of a human-resources section in the Department of Veterans Affairs. And he said, You know, Im sure youve seen a variety of government opportunities, and I can tell you that if youre interested in this type of work, your skills would be very applicable. So Deimer began the process of applying for a position with the VA.Applying for a federal position, however, wasnt a shoo-in. Even with a contact in the VA, he totenstill had to go through the same process as anyone else. The Office of Personnel management mandates that all applicants go through USAJobs.gov, create a user profile and create an online resume. Almost all federal employment opportunities are posted on the site over 53,000 jobs, ranging from positions that pay $30,000 a year to senior- level executive service positions that pay in the $150,000-per-year range. You have to upload your service record and your discharge documents, and theres a federal application for employment in which you will fully disclose a variety of personnel related questions, and youll have to upload transcripts, Deimer said. Its not hard, you just have to put the time into it.I compare it to applying to a law school or applying to college. I remember the same sort of tasks preparing and requesting transcripts, and personal statements and all that. It was intense but wel l worth it.Once Deimer got past the application process, he went through a performance-based interview that was scored by three other people I didnt know, he said. It was one of those things where you had to show your worth on paper and through an interview, and it worked out, and Im fortunate.Deimers job search lasted only a month after leaving active duty. Really, it was phenomenal I tell my wife every day how lucky I am, in the job climate that exists. I know friends in the private sector who are still out of work its been two years and counting.

Whats the best format for a resume PDF, MS Word, or txt?In general, you never want to send a resume as a txt file. Some hiring managers explicitly state what file type they want you to send the resume as, but if that information is notlage present, then you should play it safe and send a PDF. This is the most easily readable file format. In many cases, employers may request people send applications in MS Word format because it is easier for Applicant Tracking Systems to scan Word files. Energy Policy Expert David Sandalow Discusses Key Trends at IM... Energy Policy Expert David Sandalow Discusses Key Trends at IM... Energy Policy Expert David Sandalow Discusses Key Trends at IMECE KeynoteDec. 9, 2016 Energy and climate policy expert David Sandalow was the speaker at this years Keynote Event at the ASME zwischenstaatlich Mechanical Engineering Congress and preisgegebensein (IMECE) last month in Phoenix, Ariz.During a lively and enlightening Keynote Event at the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) last month in Phoenix, Ariz., noted energy and climate policy authority David Sandalow shared his thoughts on the key technology- and energy-related trends he believes will have major implications on the United States - and society in general - for the foreseeable future. Sandalow, the inaugural Fellow at Columbia Universitys Center on Global Energy Policy, began his presentation, Energy Policy and Technology Seven Trends to Wa tch, by displaying a 30-year-old photo of Shanghai, Chinas financial center, Pudong, on the ballroom screens. That bleak image depicting a cityscape of desolate factories and shipyards - Shanghai had essentially no electric lighting, when he first visited in 1981, Sandalow said - contrasted sharply with the following image of the thriving, completely electrified Shanghai of today. During those three decades, China rose to economic prominence as a leader in manufacturing and construction, evolving from a country where more than 90 percent of its population lived on less than $1.25 per day to one where fewer than 10 percent now exist at that level of poverty, Sandalow said. This change in Chinas fortunes exemplified one of several significant trends now shaping the world we live in - a trend Sandalow called the transformation of emerging economies. This kind of dramatic transformation has its drawbacks, however. All of this comes at a cost, said Sandalow, who held senio r positions at the U.S. Department of Energy, including acting Under Secretary of Energy and Assistant Secretary for Policy International Affairs before joining Columbia University. The air pollution in China is absolutely horrific. It is so bad, in fact, that the countrys residents are as cognizant of their regions PM2.5 reading, the fine-particle air pollution index, as they are of the weather and the temperature forecasts for that day. Then and now Shanghai, China in the early 1980s (top) compared to the city today.India, which has also experienced remarkable economic advances in recent years, faces a similar challenge. Indias growth is extraordinary, Sandalow said. Indias going to surpass China in terms of population, most likely within the next 20 years, he said. The economic growth in India has been steady at seven percent and growing higher than Chinas. And by the way, the air pollution schwierigkeits there are epic. The city of Delhi, for example, has reached historically hazardous air pollution levels in recent weeks, according to Sandalow. Its quite a crisis, he said. Managing these types of issues is going to be a big challenge in the years ahead.Another development Sandalow expects will have considerable consequences for society will be the transformation of the U.S. energy policy following the recent election of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States. Noting that while it is hard to predict what will occur during Trumps presidency due to the president-elects lack of previous experience as an elected official and his inconsistent stances on some issues, Sandalow said there was a reasonable amount of certainty regarding a few components of Trumps energy plan. A key feature of the plan, for instance, is expected to be a fossil fuels first philosophy, which would most likely lead to federal lands and waters being opened up to drilling and result in the lifting of the moratorium on coal drilling on federal lands. That seems to be a fairly consistent theme that he has talked about when he talks about energy, Sandalow said. David Sandalow, the keynote speaker at IMECE 2016, is the inaugural Fellow at Columbia Universitys Center on Global Energy Policy. Prior to joining Columbia, he spent four years at the U.S. Department of Energy, holding such senior positions as acting Under Secretary of Energy and Assistant Secretary for Policy & International Affairs.Other trends Sandalow identified as having significant impact on society in the years and decades to come included developments within transportation, including the combined impact of ride-sharing, electric drive trains and autonomous vehicles on the sector the potentially dramatic effect of distributed technologies and batteries on the power sector cyberspaces influence on the energy space and its role in revealing privacy issues and the literal transformation of the planet due to the effects of climate change.During a questi on and answer period following the presentation, which was moderated by ASME Executive Director Thomas Loughlin, Sandalow discussed a number of topics related to energy and engineering, including the vulnerability of the United States electric grid. We are fortunate that we have not had a major cyber-attack on the electric grid that has succeeded, he said. It is going to require constant attention and vigilance over the course of the years ahead to defend against that threat. We have adversaries who have intention in this regard. They may not yet have capability, but they may in the years ahead. And the potential consequences of electric blackouts are really devastating. Keynote speaker David Sandalow (left) fielded questions from the audience during a question-and-answer session that followed his presentation. ASME Executive Director Thomas Loughlin (right) moderated the Q&A session.Asked what the thought the United States energy portfolio might look like in the next fiv e to 10 years, Sandalow believed there would be steady growth in renewable energy, particularly solar power, and that natural gas would continue to play an increasingly strong role in our energy mix, due to its low cost. His outlook for nuclear energy and coal was not so optimistic, however, as he expected the percentage of both in the energy portfolio to drop during the next decade. His outlook for electric vehicles was brighter, though. I think well see steady growth in electric vehicles, he said. Theres a slightly slower growth curve on that. But as battery costs continue to come down, electric vehicles are going to be more and more competitive.Sandalow ended the QA with an appeal to the engineers in the audience to become engaged in the policy-making process. You are problem solvers, he said. Please take your perspective into the policy world. One of the great rewards of the more than four years I spent working at the U.S. Department of Energy was the chance to wor k with a group of professionals - many of whom were engineers - who have a problem-solving mentality. I hope you pay attention to the policy world and that you bring that perspective into it. (Left to right) ASME President Keith Roe keynote speaker David Sandalow ASME Executive Director Thomas Loughlin Kyle Squires, dean of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University, which was a Gold Sponsor of IMECE 2016 and Francine Battaglia, technical program chair of the 2016 IMECE Steering Committee.Prior to Sandalows presentation, the Keynote Event opened with the premiere of two new ASME videos. ASME President Keith Roe introduced the 2016 State of the Society video, which covers ASMEs recent activities and initiatives, including the launch of the Societys new strategy and organization model to provide a framework for the future growth and success of the Society. Leadership Rewards and Recognition - Success Secrets
Leadership Rewards and Recognition - Success SecretsLeadership Rewards and Recognition - Success SecretsToday many American corporations spend a great deal of money and time trying to increase the originality of their employees, hoping thereby to get a competitive edge in the marketplace. But such programs make no difference unless management also learns to recognize the valuable ideas among the many novel ones, and then finds ways of implementing them. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi There are two things people want more than sex and money recognition and praise. Mary Kay Ash A leader makes other people feel important and appreciated. The leader excels at creating opportunities to provide rewards, recognition, and thanks to his or her staff. A leader creates a work environment in which people feel important and appreciated. The leader leads the kollektiv in their ultimate goal of serving their customer. Along the way, to facilitate this service the leadermakes sure that employees are treat ed as they want to be treated. How Leaders Make People Feel Important Through Rewards and Recognition A key leadership trait is the ability to inspire followership. In addition to supplying a sharedvisionand direction, leaders must develop a relationship with the people they inspire to follow them. The successful leadership relationship inspires people to become more than they might have been without the relationship. Following an effective leader, people accomplish and achieve more than they may ever have dreamed possible. The foundation of this successful relationship is the leaders ability to make people feel important. (Sure, money and other benefits work to a certain extent, although, since money is a limited quantity in most organizations, you shouldnt overemphasizeitsimportance.) An outstanding leader understands that this is how she best encourages their laser-like focus on fulfilling the needs of their customers. Employees who are rewarded, recognized and thanked for this s ervice provide the best customer care. An effective leader needs to demonstrate these practices. Pay attention to people using common courtesy.Say good morning. Ask people how their weekend turned out. Ask whether Rebecca won her soccer match. Ask if the employee is feeling better. Practicing simple courtesy is a powerful relationship-building tool.Listen to what your coworkers, peers and staff members have to say.Listen giving full attentionto the rolle seeking your attention. If you cant pay full attention and listen actively, set a time with the person to meet when you can. You gain much information from the ideas and opinions of others. You make people feel special when you listen to them without distraction. Know that Rebecca has a soccer match. Use powerful, positivelanguage in your interaction with others.Say please and thank you and youre doing a good job. Say, We couldnt have accomplished the goal without you. Your contribution saved the customer for the company. Powerful, p ositive recognition makes people feel important. Powerful, positive recognition encourages your employees to contribute more of the same work in the future.Put praise in writing.A thank you note to the employee, with a copy to her file, magnifies the impact of the recognition. People have been known to display a thank you note or letter of recognition on the wall of their cubicle for years. Seriously, the impact is that powerful. Keep your commitments to staff. If you have a meeting set up for Tuesday, attend the meeting. Cancellation should not occur except in a true emergency. Promised Pat a raise? Dont do it unless you know you can keep your promise. drumherum up weekly one-to-one meetings with your reporting staff? Block out the time as if it is sacred- because to them, it is. They save up things to talk with you about all week long.Give staff public credit for contributions. You didnt think up the idea for senior staff review. Instead say, Mary thought this approach would work w ell and I agree with her. The credit belongs to John. Isnt that a terrific idea? You may think these actions sound a lot like leadership by the golden rule. Youre right, although a fellow consultant told me about an even more powerful rule- the platinum rule. In the golden rule, you treat others as you wish to be treated. In the platinum rule, you treat people asthey wish to be treated. These are powerful, yet simple, ways you can reward and recognize people. These are powerful, yet simple, ways to make the people you employ feel important and appreciated. The bottom line? Believe people are important. Act as if you believe people are important. People will feel important. Important people will serve the customer in stunning ways Important people will think of you as a great leader. Characteristics of a Successful Leadership Style Much is written about what makes successful leaders. This series will focus on the characteristics, traits and actions that many leaders believe are key. Choose to lead.Be the person others choose to follow.Provide vision for the future.Provide inspiration.Make other people feel important and appreciated.Live your values. Behave ethically.Leaders set the pace through your expectations and example.Establish an environment of continuous improvement.Provide opportunities for people to grow, both personally and professionally.Care and act with compassion.

Women dont feel safe on public transit  and its costing them money
Women dont feel safe on public transit and its costing them moneyWomen dont feel safe on public transit and its costing them moneyIn a major city like New York, using public transit is less of an option and more of a requirement if the goal is to go anywhere. But when women ride the subway, a new report suggests they know theyre likely to problematik prey to harassment.Seventy-five percent of female respondents self-reported experiencing some form of harassment or theft while riding New Yorks public transit, according to a survey by New York Universitys Rudin Center for Transportation. More than half of them are worried about being harassed during their rides. When asked how many times they had experienced harassment, respondents included answers such as countless and too many to count.Because of perceived safety threats, women change their behavior on public transit 13% said they dressed differently and 29% dont take late-night trains. Thats compared to only 3% of men who said they c hanged their clothing and 8% who avoided public transportation after a certain hour.To feel safe, women sometimes opt for a for-hire vehicle or cab service. But those alternatives to public transit weigh heavy on their bank accounts. The Rudin Center estimated that the median extra transportation cost for women because of safety concerns was $26-50 per month, or up to $600 per year. That number multiplies for female caregivers, who are responsible for transporting children and elderly family members, and who face logistical challenges as well as perceived safety risks. The study estimated female caregivers can spend an extra $100 per month, or $1200 a year, on travel. In contrast, men spend a median $0 per month extra on transportation because of security concerns. But all is not lost Experts have suggestions about how to improve the situation so women feel safer as they try to do everyday things, like go to work. For starters, public transit companies could put women in leadership pos itions to inform their safety systems and make them better for everyone. First responders could get more sensitivity training so that women who report harassment are greeted with the support they need. And technology could be updated so that monitoring and reporting become more effective. Its a fact that women pay more for all kinds of services, but they shouldnt have to undergo financial stress because they feel unsafe coming home from work or after a night out. Heres to finding the solutions that will make everyone feel more comfortable and empowered as they live their lives.
