Theres always a quiet one, a loud one and an annoying one but what are the characteristics of these colleagues? Weve taken a look at the 6 types of people youre bound to come across in your office, with a little help from Peep Show characters. Read on to work out which one you are! The Johnson: The Johnson of the office is always on the road to a promotion by getting matey with the top bosses. Theyre full of wisecracks and always have some words of wisdom that you may (or may not) need they dont care, theyll give it to you anyway! Take everything they say with a pinch of salt, and watch your back around this person theyre ruthless! Characteristics: Probably owns a Ferrari Usually gives everyone in the office a derogatory nick name, eg. Porky Can often be found car-pooling to conferences in Kettering The Corrigan: The Corrigan is an unusual person, with odd characteristics. Theyre good at what they do but they don;t really have the sophistication or confidence to do it. Theyre usually pretty awkward, so that means most of the time you can find them eating lunch alone in the corner of the canteen. Characteristics: Despite the general awkwardness of this type of person, theyre usually good at forming relationships in the workplace. Dont trust them to do big presentations or pitches they could possibly jump out the window to avoid doing them. The Jez: You know that colleague who goes a bit too crazy at the work christmas party? Or the one that takes at least 1 hungover sick day a week? Sound familiar? This type of person is always up for a bit of fun, which is nice. but can be pretty annoying too. Characteristics: Always smell of booze. Is a bit too friendly with the receptionist The Super Hans: This type of office worker is a loveable idiot. They dont seem to do anything all day apart from wander between desks looking for a piece of cake or some conversation. Characteristics: Can usually be found wandering aimlessly through the corridors. Can never usually be trusted with anything important in the workplace. The Dobby: The Dobby. Everyones got one. Everyone shouldnt have one. Thats right you guessed it the office crush. If youve ever come across a Dobby, you could probably tell from the flustered conversation and the fact you forgot where your desk is once youd spoken to them. Characteristics: Is usually found in the IT department. Likes couscous for lunch. The Jeff: This type of person always seems to be incredibly popular despite having the worlds worst sense of humour and never making anyone else in the office a cup of tea. Itâs aimed at women, and in my experience, itâs true that women tend to make moves that make them seem less confident. (Of course, that could be because we judge âpowerâ and âconfidenceâ by the manly standard of strong and silent; but thats another whole post.) Humans rely on hundreds of non-verbal signals when weâre communicating: smiles, involuntary grimaces and your eyes tell much more than what you say with words. We associate fidgeting with nervousness, and nervousness with unfavorable traits like dishonesty, guilt, or lack of self-control. Fidgeting can also display feelings that you might wish you could suppress in business dealings. Tapping your pen, jiggling a crossed leg, or almost any type of rapid, staccato movement, can betray your irritation with a speaker or an idea. If youâre ill at ease or simply bored in a meeting, it will show. Women fidget with earrings, jewelry or their hair when they get nervous; some men will clear their throat over and over or fidget with their ties. These movements serve a purpose; in nature, animals will touch or lick themselves repetitively when under stress. It soothes them and discharges stressful energy, and it makes sense that it would soothe us too. The challenge with correcting fidgety behavior is that youâre almost never conscious of it. Keywords While this suggestion is probably the most obvious, itâs also the most important. In order to make the biggest impact on the reader, your resume needs to read like youâre answering the job description directly. Consider each bullet point in the job description as an opportunity to customize your resume. Think about the main word in each âdutyâ listed and how you can incorporate that keyword into your resume. Use the organizationâs word choice as the foundation for your writing to decrease the likelihood your resume will be screened out by a human or automated resume reviewer. For example, if the job duties include a phrase like âdevelop programs designed to create and maintain a favorable public image for the employer or client,â your resume should include words like âfavorable public image.â Remember, youâre trying to land an interview, so you need to show the resume reviewer you have the skills to make an impact. 2. Statistics Another great way to catch a hiring managerâs eye is by incorporating statistics into your resume. Statistics make it easier for a hiring manager to understand the impact of your accomplishments and visualize how you can make a similar impact at their organization. Hiring managers see bullet points like âincreased salesâ or âdecreased time-to-hire,â and immediately think, Was the increase substantial? Instead of leaving hiring managers wondering, show them just how effective you were by proactively incorporating those statistics into your resume. Use phrases like âincreased sales 10% year-over-yearâ or âdecreased time-to-hire by 25% in 8 monthsâ to make an impression that will last. The real key to this strategy is to customize your statistics to make them count. Just like with the keywords you choose, make sure the statistics you choose are things the organization is seeking. If the positionâs main requirement is to manage and grow a sales list or recruit and develop a pool of potential candidates, focus on using statistics that show your ability to do those things. Use statistics that highlight how you âgenerated 10-12 original sales leads per weekâ or âadded 3-5 pre-screened, well-qualified candidates to the companyâs talent pool per day.â These kinds of statistics, customized to match each organizationâs needs, show hiring managers what you can do rather than just telling them. 3. Tone Youâve done your research and crafted your resume to include as many keywords and relevant statistics as possible. What now? Now itâs time to think about tone. When you researched the company, what tone did their materials take? Did the organization seem more laid back and creative or buttoned-up and traditional? Did the job description seem like a template, or was it eye-catching and attention grabbing? Answers to these questions can help you determine what tone you should take in both your resume and cover letter.
